Green or Eco-friendly dry cleaning refers to professional cleaning methods that avoid the use of toxic chemicals, such as perchloroethylene (perc). Perc is a VOC and carcinogen, and is used by most conventional dry cleaners. The chemical also contaminates waterways, air, and soil during its use and disposal.
What is Perchloroethylene?
Perchloroethylene (PERC) is the most widely used dry cleaning agent in the U.S. with an 85% approximate use in all dry cleaners. The chemical is a carcinogen, it is classified as a Hazardous Air Pollutant by U.S. EPA, it is classified as a Toxic Air Contaminant in California and it is listed on the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act as hazardous waste.
Do I need to worry about wearing drycleaned clothes?
As a consumer of drycleaning services, you may be exposed to levels of perc that are slightly higher than what is normally found in the outdoor air; however, these amounts are not expected to be hazardous to the average person's health. Therefore, it is very unlikely that people will get cancer from having their clothes drycleaned.
Why the change to Green?
Perc has minimal effect to consumers of drycleaning services but has been found to be harmful to people with prolonged exposure (our Kissel Cleaners Family). We decided to go green because its a healthier, cleaner, and most importantly delivers a better finished product for our consumer.
What type of green cleaning do you offer?
We offer two types of green cleaning, Organic also known as wet cleaning and hydrocarbon cleaning.
Why do you have two types of green cleaning?
Although we have both types of cleaning most all garments will be processed using our state of the art wet cleaning process. The reason we have two is for customers allergic to a water cleaning process and some items that may have better results in our hydrocarbon process.
What is wet cleaning also known as organic cleaning?
Wet cleaning uses water, along with computer-controlled washers and dryers, specialized detergents that are milder than home laundry products, and professional pressing and finishing equipment. The EPA considers it one of the safest professional cleaning methods; its benefits include no hazardous chemical use, no hazardous waste generation, no air pollution and reduced potential for water and soil contamination.
What is hydrocarbon cleaning?
Hydrocarbon cleaning uses a cleaning agent introduced by Exxon Mobil Chemical Corporation called DF-2000 Fluid. It has grown in popularity as a replacement dry cleaning fluid due to improved health, safety and environmental benefits. Unlike perc, however, DF-2000 Fluids toxicity potential is very low using the same ingredient base commonly found in cosmetics, personal care and sun protection products. DF-2000 Fluid is an environmentally friendly cleaning method and a great substitute to perc.
